Statically-typed superset of JavaScript, created at Microsoft by Anders Hejlsberg and released in 2012. TypeScript compiles to plain JS but adds a type system that catches entire classes of bugs at edit time, which is why it became the default for serious frontend and Node codebases. A rare example of a language reaching dominance by bolting onto an existing ecosystem rather than replacing it.
