folding@home

Stanford-led distributed computing project launched in 2000 that harnesses idle CPU and GPU cycles from volunteers' machines to simulate protein folding for disease research. At peak during COVID-19 it briefly became the world's most powerful computing system. Referenced by Andrej Karpathy as an existence proof that meaningful compute can be coordinated across heterogeneous, internet-connected machines — relevant to debates about distributed AI training.
