Japan's largest mobile carrier, historically famous as the birthplace of commercial emoji in 1999, when designer Shigetaka Kurita created a 176-icon set for its i-mode service. DoCoMo was years ahead of the rest of the world in mobile internet and messaging, and its emoji set became the seed from which the global standard eventually grew.
