iPod Classic — Music Management Without Apple Music
Last updated: 2026-03-21 Problem: Apple Music / iCloud Music Library replaces local files with matched (sometimes wrong) versions. Need to disable it and manage music independently.
Disable Apple Music & iCloud Music Library
On Mac
- Music app → Settings (⌘,) → General → Uncheck "Sync Library"
- Account menu → Sign Out
- Cancel subscription: System Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions → Apple Music → Cancel
Prevent Music auto-launching

Syncing to iPod Classic
iPod Classic requires iTunes — the modern Music app (macOS Catalina+) dropped support.

Recovering Original Files
- Check iTunes Media folder for originals
.m4p= DRM'd Apple Music version (bad).m4aor.mp3= your original files (good)- If lost, re-rip from CD or restore from Time Machine backup
