iPhone 5G Overheating — Troubleshooting
Problem
iPhone heats up significantly when 5G is enabled, especially in Chennai.
Root Cause
- 5G radios draw significantly more power than LTE
- Weak/patchy indoor 5G signal forces the modem to work harder
- Constant 4G↔5G handoffs in areas with spotty coverage
Chennai-Specific Notes
- Jio 5G: Uses SA (Standalone) mode — more aggressive on battery and thermals
- Airtel 5G: Uses NSA (Non-Standalone) — piggybacks on 4G, slightly less heat
- Indoor 5G coverage is weak across Chennai — phone fights to hold signal indoors
Fix
- Best fix: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options → Voice & Data → LTE
- Compromise: Use 5G Auto (lets iOS decide based on signal/thermal state)
- Daily use (browsing, WhatsApp, Instagram) shows no noticeable speed difference on LTE vs 5G
General iPhone Overheating Checklist
- Settings → Battery → check per-app usage for runaway apps
- Settings → Privacy → Location Services → check for GPS-heavy apps
- Settings → General → Background App Refresh → disable for heavy apps
- Battery Health below 80% → likely hardware issue, visit Apple Store
- Hot center/back = CPU issue; hot bottom = battery issue
